Ernie Learny Game Jam

Hello World!

Welcome to my submission for the 2024 Learn You A Game Jam. I hope you enjoy.

Our story begins on 6/19/24. The Learn You A Game Jam is now open!

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Step 1: Proper Nutrition.

Step 2: Clearing head.

Step 3: Discover Muse.

Step 4: Familial Obligations.

Step 5: Product Analysis

Step 6:  Convince roommates to watch Megamind.

Step 7: Browse for hanging planters online while stressing about not having started work on the game.

Step 8: Woop, look at the time! It's 7/1/24, and I have two days to build a game!

Shouldn't be too hard. I mean, I've never built a video game, or programmed, or really done any coding at all... but if college taught me anything, it's that I can always phone it in at the last minute and rely on the hard work of other skilled individuals!

TUTORIALS

Net Ninja's

This series walked me through basically the entire creation of the game: the narrator is concise, informative, and gives opportunities for viewers to pause the video and figure out exercise for themselves.

This feature really helped me retain information. Struggling to work through Godot's quirks using only the documentation, before continuing on to the next video, built a lot of confidence in myself. Had I had the time, I'm confident that I could create many more scenes, and better learn how to organize code structure to de-clutter. I did not, however, have time for anything more than what I submitted. This is due to my lengthy creative Process. (See Above)

Still, I feel I got a good grasp of some basic coding structure, and am excited to make more games in the future.

I relied on this tutorial less, but it seems great! I learned some things about parallax backgrounds that I ultimately did not end up using in this game.

Things I learned:

!Always check your indentation.  Always check your spelling.

!If you're at the level I'm at, and your game looks something like :

- just pretend it's the early 2000's, and you're one of those cool Newgrounds kids what makes the flash games! It's a whole different flavor of nostalgia.

!Mostly, I am reminded that the internet is a wonderful tool for learning.  There is a massive community of coders who are continually creating guides, tutorials, forums, and in general sharing resources with other game developers, and it is easy to tap into that network and start learning, wherever you are at.

Kudos and thanks to all who participated and all who made this game jam possible! It's nice to feel like a part of something bigger while I make this goofy game of mine.
